Greetings from Amsterdam

Hello!

Just wanted to pop in and say a quick hello as we make our way across Europe. The first stop on our trip was Amsterdam where we spent four days. We just fell in love with this charming city! Amazing architecture, beautiful canals, delicious food and sweet, friendly people. It was hard to say goodbye!

Here are a couple of our favorite images that I wanted to share with you.

Next up? Dubrovnik and Split in Croatia...stay tuned!

In Vacation Mode

Hello. Hope you enjoyed a nice holiday weekend. Did you go anywhere? I stayed at home but Mindy is off jet-setting to fun and fabulous places.

She's not going to any of these locales...

but this colorful Jonathan Adler coaster set (and it's charming packaging) made me think of her.

Hope you are having a great time, Mindy!

Au Revoir!

My fiance Chris and I are headed to Europe tonight for a long-awaited vacation. We'll be spending the next two-and-a-half weeks visiting Amsterdam, Croatia, and Paris. Yay! I can't wait. It's been nearly 3 years since our first trip to Paris together and we haven't stopped dreaming about it since.

In honor of our trip overseas, I wanted to leave you with this sweet image.

This illustration holds a very special place in my heart. It was given to us by Jillian and her family when we got engaged. I absolutely adore it! I imagine that this is what Chris and I will look like as we stroll through Paris, although Chris is unsure about that outfit :)

I'll be posting some of our favorite photographs throughout the trip, so please stay tuned! And of course, I'll be gathering lots of inspiration for future posts...including visits to H&M Home and the Paris flea market!

xoxo,
Mindy

Gorgeous Glasses

I'm currently working on creating a living/dining space on my porch. Although I should be researching dining tables now, these glasses that have caught my eye and completely diverted my attention. So pretty — perfect for an ice cold beverage this summer while sitting on a finished, furnished porch.

Gold Leaf Glass

I recently wrote about my visit to Terrain in Westport, Connecticut. Terrain is one of those stores where you really have to look carefully at everything around you. There are so many nuggets of goodness there. Take this, for example:

Look at those gold leaf bottles!

What a nice way to add a little glitz and make a simple bottle something really special. I like how the gold leaf here is only on the bottom section, making it more mod and graphic. You can fill the bottle with water and some leaves as shown here, or apply it to another glass surface (like a vase or candlesticks) for a unique and great gift.

A Little Game...

While flipping through the latest Land of Nod catalog, I came across this image.

Let's play a little game -- if you are a regular reader of The Pink Chalkboard, can you spot the items that we have found elsewhere and previously posted about?

It's so fun (and validating!) to see that the fine folks at Land of Nod like the same things that we do. Posts about Fairy Tale posters and this Tube Station Wall Clock can be found here and here. And speaking of liking the same things, how about that Bullseye Wall Art?

It's now a new favorite of mine.

Good Looking Logos

One morning while checking my email, I noticed a message in my inbox from Soap.com. Soap.com? I had never heard of the company and was about to press delete when I spotted this logo and paused.

Hmmm, I thought. It's actually kind of cute. I like the color palette, the type selections are nice, and the little drop within the "A" is just my kind of detail. So I clicked on the link and discovered that Soap.com is part of a family of online stores owned by the e-commerce company, Quidsi.

And you know what? I realized that I liked all of their brands' logos.

Beauty Bar looks sophisticated; Diapers.com is friendly and helpful; Casa.com has an industrial-chic vibe to it; and most of all I love the playfulness of Wag.com and YoYo.com. The way the tail of the "g" looks like it is wagging in Wag.com is so smart, and the design of YoYo.com—and the name itself—evoke the feeling of an old-fashioned toy store within the very modern medium of a website.

Most importantly, the appeal of each of these logos convinced me to check out their websites. Now that's the power of good design.

Terrain in Westport

Last week, I was in Connecticut for a few days and my trip there just happened to coincide with the opening of Terrain in Westport. What a treat it was to be there! Filled with gorgeous plants, decor, furnishings, and much more, Terrain is one of those places where you want to spend hours looking and re-looking at everything. I get so much inspiration there.

Using chairs as wall art isn't customary, but if you have high ceilings and need storage, this works. The rope used to hang them added to the look and the set of three made it intentional.

Using barn doors as decor is another good idea. It looks nice here filling the very tall wall space, but you can get a similar look by just leaning a barn door against a wall in your home. These doors can be used as is or if you are planning on painting a door (like the one here on the far right) why not make it even more functional by painting it with chalkboard paint. Pink chalkboard paint perhaps?

Or if using a door outside, stagger potted plants up it.

Terrain has lots of pretty chairs for both indoors and out. This photo doesn't do this chair justice, but the mix of materials, in particular the burlap on the sides of the chair, really makes this chair something special.

And while this car wasn't actually part of Terrain, it was parked right outside and I just had to include it.

I mean, just look at this face! So adorable.

A Beautiful Home

Jillian's posts on DIY abstract art (seen here and here) have really inspired me, and I especially love the idea on a larger scale. I stumbled upon this photo in Elle Decor Espana while researching examples to inspire my own project. I soon dropped all thoughts of creating my own art after becoming captivated by this London home.

Just take a look at images from the rest of this space, owned by Christine d'Ornano and her husband, Marzouk Al-Bader. The pops of color here are great. I suddenly crave a yellow chair!

This is such a great shot. Do you see that door? It's upholstered! (Jenny from Little Green Notebook actually posted about the door here).

This is the floor of my dreams. The black and white tile was restored by the homeowners.

More upholstery! The walls, headboard, and bed frame are covered in fabric by Osborne & Little. The mirror over the bed is a great scale for the room and makes this space sparkle. How cute is the little Jonathan Adler "hugs" accent pillow on the bed?

And I am head-over-heals for this dining/kitchen area. This is the perfect combination of vintage, industrial, and rustic with a splash of color. Love the pendant lights!

So pretty. Paired with gorgeous furniture and accessories, the unframed photos on the wall in the room below add a nice dose of casual humor.

I hope you enjoy this home as much as I do! For more photos and some great detail shots, click here for the tour. Or, check out photographer Philip Sinden's portfolio for the original magazine article.

Hi Honey!

Have you noticed all of the small, independent honey companies cropping up lately? Many have beautifully designed logos and pretty packaging. They certainly have come a long way from the traditional honey bear of my childhood. These packages are sophisticated and charming, and I think a special jar of honey could make a great housewarming gift. Here are some of my favorites.

Le Chandelier

If you are a regular Pink Chalkboard reader, you know that we are a bit smitten with light fixtures. That's why I fell in love with these images from a beautiful little tea room in London called Le Chandelier. The name says it all! Gorgeous antique chandeliers fill the space by creating a cozy, elegant atmosphere. The decor, consisting of eclectic furniture pieces, accent mirrors, and tones of pink and blue, is a wonderful compliment to the lighting scheme, and makes the space feel inviting and romantic. Just the type of place I would love to settle into for a delightful cup of tea.

Ceiling Medallions

While walking through Bloomingdales a few weeks ago, I spotted this -- ceiling medallions as wall art!

Isn't that a clever idea? I had been eyeing the ceiling medallions at Lowe's a few years back when I was looking at light fixtures. Old school, plaster medallions are super heavy but the ones at Lowes are a very light plastic. They would be perfect for a project like this!

Here the medallions are backed with shiny silver paper but I would like to see them with mirrors or photographs inside. And while the white color looks great as is, these could easily be spray painted a different color (or metallic) for a completely different look.

When it comes to hanging these, consider layering a few of them as they did here for added interest. Mindy has written about the beauty of layering frames. The same thing applies here!

Clover Market May 2012

It's Clover Market season again! Yesterday was the second sale of the season and oh, my, was it fantastic! This market is better than ever—featuring over 100 vendors, a great variety of items for every style, and delicious food. It's been amazing to watch this little market grow into such a successful event.

One of my favorite new finds is Made By Liddy. I am kind of obsessing over their gorgeous paper flowers and wreathes made out of repurposed book pages (pictured below). At the Market, the paper roses were attached to sycamore branches and grouped together in large blue-tinted ball jars. They looked absolutely amazing! I can't wait to get my own arrangement at the next Market.

In the meantime, you can check out all of Made By Liddy's handmade paper products at their shop. Be sure to mark your calendars for the next Clover Market on June 3rd.

A Garland of Vases

I saw this really clever garland of vases while shopping at Terrain the other day. It is created by stringing together a series of bud vases, and looks beautiful hanging in a window, or outside against a wall. I love the options for delicate little flower arrangements, too. What a simple and pretty idea.

If you like this look and want to try it at home, check out this tutorial. Please be sure to send us your photos!

Enjoy

Gorgeous styling. Incredible photographs. The images below are a collaboration between designer Monique Keegan, owner of Enjoy Co., and photographer John Urbano, for Aerie. Together, they have created a fantasy land in which I would happily live. These vintage scenes offer vibrant pops of color, abundant texture, pretty florals, and a touch of typography. Perfection!
