pretty pendant lights, pillows, and doughnuts

I visited Doughnut Plant in NYC for the first time on Saturday and spied these pretty little pendant lights in the shop:

They reminded me of Jillian's post about exposed bulbs and the silver tip lightbulb. I think these are perfect examples.

The interior design at Doughnut Plant (I went to the Chelsea location) is fantastic. Not only are the doughnuts sweet but the decor is too. Check out these adorable doughnut shaped pillows that line one of the walls:

I must say that the doughnuts are delicious. I am a huge Krispy Kreme fan and Doughnut Plant may possibly have them beat. Plus, my doughnut (coconut glaze filled with coconut cream) was square. How cool is that?

Hope your weekend was sweet and delicious too!

Window Films

Last year, when my husband and I were looking to buy a house, one of the things we were looking for was a home with lots of natural light.  We were quite fortunate to find that, but after we moved in, we realized that lots of natural light = many windows = many window treatments. And covering those windows can be crazy expensive.

While we decided which window treatments we wanted on all of our windows (a major decision), we lived with no window treatments at all for months.  Well hello, new neighbors!  I did enjoy the light but I wanted some privacy, too.  I kept thinking that I could find a film or sticker that I could apply to the window temporarily that would be both functional and pretty but the few things I found were unattractive and quite complicated to install.

That was then.  Today, I just came across these window films at Design Public.

They are super subtle but I love the little bit of graphic style that they bring.  Perfect for some privacy while still allowing tons of light into your space.

Most of my windows are covered now (Hunter Douglas' Designer Roller Shades are beautiful) but I am definitely filing these beauties away for some time in the future.  Maybe one day in the 3rd floor office?  Until then, I hope one of you buy these and let me know what you think.  I think they are lovely.

Ruffle Goodness

Urban Outfitters has lots of ruffle goodness this season.

Look! My bedding (which I have in white) is now available in shades of blue. And by the way, how cute is that little chair beside the bed?

Don't you just love all of these ruffles?

Ribbons!

An absolutely amazing store and resource in NYC is M&J Trimming.  They sell everything from buttons and rhinestones to appliques and lace.  My favorite thing there, though, are the ribbons.

1" Hand Dyed Silk Satin Ribbon Style 33103

1/4" Single Stitched Grosgrain Style 02394

7/8" Tonal Stripe Ribbon Style 32080

6mm Reversible Stitched Satin Ribbon Style 33689

15mm Grosgrain Fantasy Ribbon Style 34304

25mm Wired Picot Stripe Ribbon Style 38948

7/8" Grosgrain Polka Dot Ribbon Style 39006

I usually think of ribbon as something to decorate a present with or as a way to add color and uniqueness to a basic pair of curtains.  But check out this idea -- ribbons as room decoration!

So simple and yet elegant and punchy (a rare, yet fabulous combination, I think).  Decorating with ribbons is a fast and easy way to transform a room.  Perfect for homeowners and renters alike since you can connect all of those little ribbons to one single strip of ribbon and have very few holes in the wall.  A big bang for your very little buck.

I Love My City

Looking through Etsy recently, I came across the work of Judy Kaufmann.  This one in particular is my favorite.

It reminds me of NYC and though I don't live there anymore, I still think of it as my city.  Here are some others that caught my eye, too.

All of her work has such a good feeling to it.  They are simple, graphic and happy.  I love them.

Zigzag

I love these images from Tony Clark on flickr. First of all, his furniture is amazing. I love the gorgeous wood paired with metal mirrored legs. But what really gets me is his photo composition...and the zigzags. Placing this furniture on a zigzag floor that is reflected back in the mirrored legs is unbelievable!

Jillian and I were talking about these images and she reminded me of a great post on Design*Sponge featuring a zigzag wall treatment. Take a look:

I think we need more zig zags in life, don't you?

Pretty Patterned Luggage

I recently received the Boden Summer 2011 catalog.  Mindy posted about a gorgeous scarf from Boden a few weeks ago but looking at the new catalog today, a different kind of thing caught my eye.  Check out that luggage!

It got me thinking -- couldn't this be a DIY project?  I often see old suitcases for sale at flea markets and yard sales.  Imagine buying one or two of them and then covering them with patterned paper. I think the key to this, though, is finding a suitcase with the right shape.  The suitcases here look especially good since the brown edges of the original suitcase are exposed.  I think it makes it look even more modern that way.

I imagine a stack of pretty patterned luggage beautifying the corner of a living room but also being highly functional as storage space for throws, magazines, etc.

I'm officially adding old suitcases to my mental list of things to look for the next time I pass by a yard sale.

Suburban Girl

I have really fallen in love with the set from the movie Suburban Girl. The main character's apartment is just so cool and eclectic and I wanted to share it with you.

Here are some screen shots from the film. Sorry if the images are dark. The main character Brett (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) only spends a little time in the apartment, mostly at night.

Here is her living room. Great furniture selection, accessories, color, and mix of patterns:

Here is the dining room. The white palette is such a nice place for your eye to rest among all of the color throughout the rest of the set:

I think the headboard in her bedroom is amazing.

And finally, I wanted to include this last photo because I just love the reference to Judy Blume.
So great!

Suburban Girl stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alec Baldwin and is based on the book The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing.

Rex Ray

A few years ago, I came across the work of Rex Ray.  His artwork, particularly his collages, are so lovely.  I was thinking of him recently and went to his website and was delighted to see this first image.

Graphic, colorful, playful and fun, this is the perfect intro into the website and work of Rex Ray.

Here are some particular favorites:

Love those colors and organic shapes.
