The Versatile Desk

A few months ago, my mother-in-law showed me this image from the home of Dolce and Gabanna in InStyle's September 2010 issue.  She thought I'd be interested in it and boy was she right.  The designers pushed together four antique desks to make one large dining table.

I think that's a pretty clever solution for a dining table, but also a great solution for small space living.  After years of living in small apartments in NYC, I've come to very much appreciate items that are multi-functional and this idea certainly fits the bill. In a studio space, desks can act as room dividers, additional kitchen counter space, sofa tables, as well as the typical work stations. Pushing two or even four together would make an amazing space for entertaining.

Some of these desks would work perfectly for this:

This desk from West Elm is available in lots of colors and finishes. The tumeric (yellow) color would be such an unexpected and punchy color especially when grouped together for a large dining table

Home Decorators' parsons desk is offered in different colors at a much better price

I recently purchased this Ikea desk to sit behind my couch. It's long and thin shape is sleek and pretty. Two would look fantastic pushed together.

This one from Overstock.com is a more traditional desk, but would still work just as well.

The wheels on this CB2 desk are an added bonus!

Mindy, I know this is a favorite of yours. Multiples of this clear CB2 desk would work nicely, too.

What do you think? Would you ever consider buying multiples of the same desk to use in this way?
