Ghost Chairs

Years ago I fell in love with this Louis Ghost Armchair.

I mean, it's just so pretty. Clean lines, delicate shape and see-through so it's perfect for a small space. And while that original ghost chair is still on my list of things I want to buy one day, I recently came across some other ghost chairs that are quite nice, too.

I love doughnuts, especially Krispy Kremes, so it was only a matter of time before these melt-in-your-mouth treats would inspire me. Valentine's Day turned out to be the perfect occasion, when Krispy Kreme released this commercial that is almost as sweet as the doughnuts themselves. I invite you to watch Spread the Love...

Black and white concept, cheerful soundtrack, adorable outfits (hello polka dot dress!), with an original glazed doughnut at the end. Could it be more perfect? I would jump in and live in this world in a heartbeat.

Room Service

I recently took a trip to San Francisco and really fell in love with the city. It is so amazing!

One of the best shopping finds of my trip was the store Room Service. I had read about it on Emily Henderson's blog as a frequent source on Secrets From a Stylist, and was super excited to find it while strolling through San Francisco's Hayes Valley neighborhood.

I picked up a couple of great accessories but unfortunately couldn't take any of the furniture with me. So I thought I would share some of my favorite finds here instead.

Room Service has some really great living room displays featuring upholstered sofas in luxe gray textiles. The nailhead trim on these pieces is dynamite.

(Did you catch the curvy white legs on this piece above? I love that detail!)

The sofa below has such a clean silhouette. The illustrations on the pink and white throw pillows keep this piece from taking itself too seriously. What a great touch!

For a totally different look, try these shiny lacquered pieces in black and bright pops of color.

How could you not love a peace-sign-shaped chair in hot pink?

This curvy lacquered chair and mirrored desk would add some serious sparkle to any space.

And just for good measure, I had to include this chair. I've never seen anything like it! I love the extremely tall back and the moroccan print. This would make a great statement piece in an entryway...or a pair of these at opposite ends of a dining table in a room with vaulted ceilings would be quite dramatic.

I spotted these flower arrangements on Jayson Home's website. Aren't these images so beautiful? I love how well the rustic burlap vases are paired with the delicate flowers. Soft white roses or bright pink tulips--either way, these bouquets are simply breathtaking.

Chalkboard Project: How to Paint Furniture

A few months back, our fabulous friend, Channa, invited us to help style a photo shoot for her. It was a sophisticated New Year's Eve Dessert Party and we used my home as the backdrop. (A painted backdrop was featured here.) Channa's designed invitation and arrangements of chocolate and candy confections were set up and styled on some pieces near and dear to my heart.

This dresser belonged to my Great Aunt Rose. It used to be dark wood and it had lion head drawer pulls. The actual puller was a large ring in the lion's mouth -- not exactly what I would call fresh and modern. After a few coats of glossy gray paint and lots of attention, this dresser is now one of my favorite items in my home.

This is how I did it:

Step 1: Remove the old hardware. To prep the surface, I put some paint thinner on a rag and wiped over the entire piece.

Step 2: Fill in holes and touch up deep scratches with wood filler. Then using medium grit sandpaper, I lightly sanded the entire surface until it was slightly rough to the touch. I removed the dust by wiping it with a damp cloth.

Step 3: One coat of primer. I used Coronado's Grip & Seal Interior/Exterior White Primer.

Step 4: I allowed the primer to dry for 2 hours then I painted the dresser with Benjamin Moore's Kendall Charcoal paint (latex semi-gloss enamel). I ended up using 3 coats of paint although I probably could have gotten by with just 2 coats. I waited 3-4 hours between each coat.

Step 5: Following Jenny's advice, I poured Wipe-On Poly on a lint-free rag and wiped the surface to add an extra touch of gloss.

Step 6: Then came the fun part -- selecting great hardware and lining the interior with pretty paper. I found these knobs at Anthropologie and the shelf inside the dresser (not shown) is lined with yellow and white polka dot paper from Paper Source.

A lot of work, but a labor of love. It's so nice transforming an already sentimental piece of furniture into something new and unique that I will treasure for many more years to come.

One of my favorite episodes of Sarah Richardson's latest show, Sarah 101, is the Sophisto-Nursery. Sarah and her design sidekick, Tommy Smythe, did an incredible job with this room. Just take a look...

My favorite touch? Their use of flash cards as artwork.

What a great DIY idea!

I tend to frame everything I can get my hands on--from stickers to wine labels to favorite greeting cards--so naturally I thought this was brilliant. I love that Sarah selected black and white images from a series of flash cards purchased at a museum shop. Nice and modern.

But what if you are going for a different, more vintage kind of look?

I recently discovered these adorable French alphabet flash cards from Cavallini & Co. and thought they, too, would make charming artwork in a nursery.

And if you are a theme person like me, you might even consider framing this matching poster...

Shane Confectionery

The Philadelphia neighborhood of Old City is home to many historic sites -- Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and Betsy Ross' house to name a few. Many come to this neighborhood to experience history through these sights. I encourage you to come and experience the tastes.

Shane Confectionery has been making candy at this location since 1863. Home to chocolates and candies and all sorts of delicious treats, Shane Confectionery recently re-opened it's doors following a complete renovation that restored the shop to it's period aesthetic and old-time beauty. The tiniest details have been tended to. The result is a shop that pleases both the eye and the taste buds.

Take a large sheet of paper or a canvas (similar to what I did here) and just start painting circles or triangles all over, layering them on top of each other as you go. It can be done with a paint brush but I think it would be better drizzled onto the canvas.

I am so into abstract art lately and am itching to try this now, too!

Whimsical Garland

My obsession of the moment...

Delightful pieces of rope, cord, and trim are draped over the bed and along the wall. Simple white bed linens set off the warm, pretty color palette of the garland. That solo light bulb (love the shape!) is a great touch.

I admit that the styling is not practical, but I just love the romantic feel. So beautiful in its funky imperfection.

This photo is actually of a room at a new hotel in Amsterdam called Hotel The Exchange. A concept hotel, each room was designed by a student or graduate of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. You can read more about this ambitious project here and see more photos here.

Painted Wall Mural

My good friend, graphic designer and packaging extraordinaire, Maribeth, just updated her bedroom and I'm delighted to share her photos with you. Inspired by this West Elm bedding,

Maribeth painted a mural behind her bed. Here's what she had to say about it:

It is a small but long room, so I wanted a visual element at the far end behind the bed to create a strong focal point and some drama. I was also having difficulty figuring out a way to create some balance due to the asymmetrically placed glass inset at the top. I couldn't figure out any kind of wall hanging that would do the trick. So, an all over wall mural seemed like a good solution.

We have featured some of Maribeth's design work here before (many of her works were honored at the Philadelphia Design Awards) and are happy to get a glimpse now into her home.

Seletti has done it again!

I had posted here back in August about Seletti's use of colorful polka dot and stripe patterns on traditional furniture styles. The result was really incredible. And now, they have teamed up with CTRLZAK Art & Design Studio for another amazing project. This time they have reinvented conventional china patterns.

East meets West in the aptly named Hybrid collection. Designers have literally paired Eastern and Western patterns on the same piece and the outcome is sensational. Just take a look...

Hello drama! These place settings are full of spirit. Can you imagine a long dining table filled with these pieces? So eclectic and so cool.

Seletti and CTRLZAK have really taken the concept of mismatched china (a favorite of mine) to a whole new level.

Inspired by Franz Kline

A few weeks ago, we mentioned the fabulous photo shoot we styled with Channa. Now it's time to show some more pics from that shoot. Here are some shots of the dessert table.

The dark chocolates and bold yellow candies are certainly delectable-looking on their own, but we wanted to make a bolder statement to the overall tablescape so we placed a graphic painting of mine behind it. A statement piece like this is certainly easy to create yourself.

Inspired by Franz Kline's work, I decided to try my hand at making something similar to it. Here are some of his works that I looked to for inspiration:

In my last apartment, I needed a headboard but I wasn't willing to spend a lot of money for it (sleeping with my head right up against the brick wall just wasn't comfy). So I purchased a large white stretched canvas from Dick Blick and added some subtle detail with brown tape. It was temporary, simple and matched my duvet. Nothing fancy, but it worked.

I wanted to reuse that canvas for my painting. I had some white primer left over from a dresser I painted so I put that down first so the background would be a clean, bright white. Then I just had fun with black acrylic paint and some large paintbrushes. A brush stroke here, a brush stroke there, and 20 minutes later it was done.

So simple, yet energetic and fun. A statement piece for the living room, dining room, bedroom...
or even as the backdrop for a festive dessert table!

Half-Painted

Over the past year I've been noticing a design trend in which furniture and home accessories look like they are, well...half-painted.

I first spotted this idea on Urban Outfitter's website. They often feature their bedding with a half-painted iron headboard, like this:

So charming and just different enough to make you pause and take notice.

And then I started seeing other pieces, like this table from West Elm...

or this whimsical alternative from Curtis Popp...

and even these chairs.

This trend doesn't seem to be stopping at furniture, either. Check out these baskets:

While the basket in the image above is made out of different materials, I think it follows the same idea.

Even tabletop items are looking half-painted. Take a look at this cup and saucer set with the fun handle. Isn't this pop of color fun?

And because I love all things silverware (featured here and here), I thought it would be perfect to finish my little collection with this half-painted serving set. A playful take on a traditional design.

I really hope we see more of this half-painted trend in 2012. I think it's a great way of showing the beauty in something that is unfinished.

Yellow Houndstooth

When I was a little girl, my house was filled with colors and patterns. My mom has a keen eye for graphic patterns and decor that packs a punch. She was really into wallpapers, too. After all, it was the early '80s.

A while back, I posted about the Marimekko wallpaper that was in my bedroom. Bold, geometric and metallic wallpaper was in the kitchen, a graphic animal safari covered the walls of the bathroom, and my parents' room was wall to wall yellow houndstooth.

Here's me at age 2 not at all appreciating my surroundings.

As a teenager, I remember making fun of some of these wallpaper selections and kidded my mom about it. Now, though, I appreciate my mom's decorating style and ahead-of-her-time love of all things graphic and cool.

This houndstooth rug is striking in its simplicity. It's a well-known pattern but not one that is seen a lot, at least not in home decor. The rug is available in 4 color options but my personal favorite is -- without a doubt -- the yellow.

Gold...and Black?

My love for all things silverware continues!

I have been seeing gold flatware over the past few months and I'm really liking this trend. My favorite is this gorgeous set from the Portuguese company Almoco Flatware.

Isn't this place setting so pretty?

Without a doubt.

But what do you think about this same set in a matte black finish?

Definitely a bit edgy! I also don't know quite how I feel about it yet. It does look striking in the beautifully-styled photo below.

But, could I actually eat with this flatware? Hmmm...

Maybe if I see this look in more ads, blogs, and photos with food, I'll consider giving it a try. (Have you noticed that the more you are exposed to something, the more you tend to like it?) Maybe this will become my favorite design trend of 2012. Who knows?

Speaking of Perforated Perfection...

A few months ago, Jillian posted here about light fixtures that cast a gorgeous glow because of tiny perforated holes in their metallic surfaces. When I saw this image in House Beautiful, I thought it was a great example of her "perforated perfection," but on a larger scale and in a completely different medium.

Believe it or not, this look was actually created with custom-printed Mylar wallpaper. Isn't it amazing?

Major impact! This Bombay wallpaper by Brunschwig and Fils works really well on the low, slanted ceilings in a room with only one window. Paired with the bold orange and purple hues, this shiny "perforated" wall treatment adds a luminous feel to this small space. Pure radiance!

Inspiration from Books -- Virginia Johnson

I did something different this year. For the first time in a long time, I told my husband a few gifts that I wanted for the holidays. They were things that I had been looking at for a while but just never picked up for myself. Things that aren't "need to have" but rather "nice to have". What are they?

Books.

I got three: Design*Sponge at Home, The Perfectly Imperfect Home: How to Decorate and Live Well, and Domino: Book of Decorating: A Room-by-Room Guide to Creating a Home That Makes You Happy.

I have only perused a few pages of each so far but I am struck by the amount of inspiration I have already received by them. Many, many posts will stem from these books, I'm sure!

And here is one to start -- The Perfectly Imperfect Home: How to Decorate and Live Well is unique in that all images in the book (furnishings, rooms, even patterns) are watercolors. Illustrated by the talented Virginia Johnson, these depictions of popular fabrics are my favorites:

The watercolor illustrations turn these fabric patterns into more fabulous works of art. The last one shown with its inspirational quote is my favorite...and someday soon will be framed and placed on my future gallery wall.

Much more goodness will be shared from this photo shoot in the coming months including a bold painting, refinished dressers, an upholstered chair and fun ways to use patterns.

G is for Great-Looking Gifts

I recently posted about using colored masking tape to make your wrapped presents distinctive and good-looking. Here's another wrapping idea that I found on Martha Stewart's website:

Gosh, I think this is great. I'm a big fan of monograms but I've never thought to use them on presents. I like this example particularly because of the big, bold size of the letters. Plus, the website recommends recycling holiday cards from previous years and cutting out the monogramed letters from them. Genius and gorgeous. A wonderful combination.

A Great Gift

We've all been told to never judge a book by it's cover. But what if the cover looked like this?

So stunningly beautiful, Anthropologie's Embroidered Penguin Classics would make great holiday gifts. They are a perfect way to introduce great stories to a new audience or they would make a truly special gift for someone who has long been a fan. (My personal favorite of those shown below? Definitely The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Loved it as a kid.)

Tape it up!

We have posted about unique picture frame ideas (here, here, and here) and thought these frames that I spotted in J.Crew's holiday catalog are another fun example.

What a charming idea! Simply use different pieces of Japanese washi tape to frame a favorite image. There are so many cute patterns of washi tape that you can use to create all kinds of frames. And since they are temporary, you don't have to commit to any one style.

I love this idea for a wall in a child's bedroom, but I also think that you could frame holiday cards with festive tape patterns (like these, for instance) in your kitchen or entryway. It would definitely make for an eye-catching and clever gallery wall!

Dale Chihuly

Are you familiar with the work of Dale Chihuly? My aunt is a huge fan of his and she introduced me to his stunning glassworks.

A few years ago, I went to the New York Botanical Gardens to see his stunning work against the garden's gorgeous backdrop. Here are some images of the exhibit from his website:

Certainly the photos above are beautiful, but when I was there, I took some photos really close-up. I like the abstract quality that close-up photos give you. And when the subject matter is as lovely as Dale Chihuly's art, then the close-ups would be wonderful little gems framed in your home.

I'm going to add some of these to my gallery wall one day. Have you ever framed your own close-up artwork after a day out with your camera? If so, please share!

I adore this print ad from Gap Kids. It feels so bright, happy, and fun. Exactly how I want to feel during the holidays!

Spotted on the back of December's Real Simple magazine, I think the color palette of juicy pinks with touches of sparkly and shiny gold is a great alternative for the holidays. And the theme of I Want Candy is so festive and sweet too.

And can we just talk about all of this ruffle-goodness for a second?! Love it!

The print ad above is part of Gap Kids' I Want Candy holiday campaign that kicked off with this adorable music video.

So creative, spunky, and a great modern take on the holidays.

Definitely my favorite ad campaign of the season!

Pretty Picture Frames

I get emails a few times a week from Better Homes and Gardens. There are so many good ideas on their website! Recently, I saw this:

What are those cute frames? Placemats!

Isn't that a clever idea? Just tape or glue a photo inside and you have a super unique frame (and a lightweight one, too -- tape alone would hold most placemats up.

Here are some pretty placemat options that I think would work well as a frame.

Flywheel Press

When I was looking at images for Jillian's baby announcement, I stumbled upon this sweet greeting card from Flywheel Press and was immediately smitten.

Oh my goodness, those little feet made my heart go pitter patter! And the "est. 2010" was just the perfect touch.

I was disappointed after finding out that they had sold out of their 2011 cards and I couldn't use this image for my post. But the very sweet Amber (owner/designer/letterpresser extraordinaire) added a 2011 card to the press for me when she was printing her 2012 cards. Isn't that so thoughtful?

So, I wanted to take a moment to thank Amber for going out of her way for me! And I also wanted to share lots of lettepressed goodness with you from Flywheel Press. Her design concepts are quite charming and the detail and quality of work is exquisite.

Loving Paris

Meet my new favorite typeface, Paris. Designed by Moshik Nadav, I think it is spectacular! Take a look...

I love how this typeface is proper and a bit swirly and playful at the same time. It feels so much like how I imagine 1920's Paris would have been. Gorgeous.

And I couldn't resist sharing this ampersand. Isn't it pretty? It would look great with other great ampersands that I posted about here.

Letter Love

Joy of joys -- check out these ornaments!

Beautiful tye dye goodness from Anthropologie. While using them as initials would make a lovely addition to any tree, I would use them in a different way. I think they would be really special in a kids room. Spell out a child's name and link them all together with a long piece of ribbon, evenly spacing each letter and then knotting them all in place. A long name would look particularly nice hanging behind a crib or a bed. A shorter name would look great hanging on the bedroom door, too.

Using them in a kid's room was the first thing to come to mind, but they can actually be reused in many ways throughout the year. What if you have enough letters on hand to spell out different things? Happy Birthday would be sweet. Or celebrate whenever you have a party. Or perhaps best of all, for those days when a hug and kiss just isn't enough, an I love you would most definitely do the trick.

Countdown!

I have always loved advent calendars. They are such a a charming way to count down the days to Christmas. There are so many cute variations out there, too. The Hats and Mittens Advent Calendar from Garnet Hill is my favorite this year.

The miniature knitted hats and mittens are just too sweet. I love the idea of tucking little gifts inside each "day." It's fun to think about what little surprises await!

I love that this version is a type of garland, too. Drape it across a mantle, piano (as shown below), a doorway, or even around your tree.

It is such a happy and colorful way to decorate while enjoying the holiday season!

Cluster of Goodness

While exploring the great blog, Atypical Type A, I came across a post about alternative uses for pallets. While all of the images are beautiful and so interesting, I was quite taken with something else in this photograph -- that cluster of goodness above the bed. What a unique way to add pizazz to a room.

It looks like there are a few lights in there along with tissue paper pom poms and confetti. What a fun and easy weekend project this would be. It doesn't look too complicated and can be easily customized to fit in any color palette and at various levels of sophistication.

10,000 logos

Wow, this is one of the most ambitious projects I've ever seen!

Designer Nicole Meyer is creating a logo for each of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes. Called Branding 10,000 Lakes, she is unveiling one logo each day and it will take her over 27 years to complete!

I moved away from NYC two and a half years ago. I'm happy in the suburbs but every now and then I see an image of New York that makes me wish I was back on those city streets. Here is the latest one that I've come across.

There is something so special about this. The glow of the lights against the dusky night sky are beautiful. It reminds me of my walks home each night after work as the sun set behind the buildings and the streets started to quiet down.

So lovely...and so very New York.

Isn't this chair from Found Design Miami gorgeous?

I was immediately reminded of Jillian's Fabulous Florals post when I spotted it on Etsy. The pattern and bright colors are so beautiful.

Do you know what is even more fabulous about this chair?

The floral pattern is completely hand painted!

The ladies at Found Design Miami rescue old furniture and refinish it. In this case, they spent over 20 hours painting the floral design on upholstery-grade linen. I think the effect is absolutely amazing. Check out more of their work here!

All Wrapped Up

I read one time about someone who wrapped all of his presents in the same colored paper and tied them all with the same colored bow. His "signature wrapping" made for a nice presentation but it also was economical and easy to maintain. Instead of buying rolls upon (small) rolls of wrapping paper, he bought both the paper and ribbon in bulk. And when the gift-giving season was over, he wasn't left with various amounts of odd-shaped bits of miscellaneous wrapping paper taking up tons of room in his closet.

I've always liked this idea. So simple, but I feared it would get boring. That's why something like this is so appealing to me:

What if you had one color wrapping paper (white, for instance) and just decorated each package with different colored masking tapes? Each package would look original and unique but so chic.

Good looking and fun but best of all it's so easy!

be-ribboned

Do you remember Jillian's post about ribbons? She featured a terrific photo that showed various ribbons hung across a wall as room decor. I thought this Be-Ribboned Mobile from PB Teen was an interesting twist on that idea.

Isn't it so sweet? I think it would be absolutely charming hanging in a girl's room. The mobile includes little chalkboard disks on which you can write little words or messages, giving it a personalized touch.

I also think this could be a really easy DIY project. Find a lampshade with a nice silhouette (like this or this), cut apart the shade and paint the exposed frame (feel free to go wild with color here!). Hang some pretty ribbons from M&J Trimming at the top (think fun textures and colors), glue or stitch in place, and hang from an "s" hook in the ceiling.

Voila! You have your very own mobile.

Reflections of H&M

I just stumbled upon these images of the launch of H&M's Home line at their flagship location in Stockholm (back in 2009). Oh my goodness, it is breathtaking!

Entitled Home Reflections, branding agency UXUS created this incredible installation, making use of mirrors, illustrated suspended furniture (hello! so creative!), and H&M's home decor items to create a "looking glass" effect. Isn't it captivating?

The concept here was to "imagine the world through a looking glass, to explore our ever-changing relationship between identity and style."

The result? The trendy H&M aesthetic captured within the surreal world of Alice in Wonderland. I wish I could have hung out here!

Sadly, the H&M Home line is not available in the United States yet.

It is a really inspiring ad! Starbucks is collaborating with the Opportunity Finance Network to start the Create Jobs for USA Fund. The Starbucks Foundation is matching individual $5 donations with a $5 million investment to support and sustain jobs in small businesses.

Great graphics, animation, and inspiring music all support a simple, yet powerful message. Work together to support small businesses and jobs will grow.

Colorful Chevrons

Mindy has written before about zig zags, and I certainly love color. Put the two together and what do you get? Colorful chevrons!

I like these notecards with their somewhat subdued color palette.

These pinback buttons would look cute on a jacket, but I would want to use them instead as push pins on a cork board.

And then what's not to love about this scrapbook paper? The possibilities of things to do with this are endless!

Stand-out Stools

Saw this photo in Crate & Barrel's latest catalog and was instantly smitten with the eclectic mix of barstools lining that gorgeously long counter.

Certainly mix-matched chairs have been popular for a while (as a devoted fan of Friends, I remember the varied bunch of chairs around the table in Monica's kitchen), but seeing various bar stools along one counter is something I haven't seen before. In the restrained color palette shown above, this could easily be done in the home.

It's a fun way to add some personality to the kitchen. Plus then you can play the game, which stool suits your personality best. The Vienna Barstool (second from the left) is so fun and swirly, but I think I would have to go with the Folio Leather Barstool (far left) for me.

I have been going through old blog posts on Canadian House & Home's website and stumbled upon a decal debate that I found really interesting. Writer Reiko Caron posted that they were "out" except for some instances when used in a child's bedroom. Kathryn Bala however, disagreed, and showed a photo of her own home with a huge power line decal across the wall. It is really graphic and bold and she's happy with her choice. Here is a photo of her living room:

What do you think?

I happen to have strong feelings about this particular discussion because I have lots and lots of decals in our very small apartment. I'm sure that I went a bit over-the-top (it is my first apartment after all, so I'm allowed to go a little wild, right?) but I have to say that the quality and creativity in the decal world is really impressive! And they just keep getting better. For example, take a look at the Rex Ray decals that Jillian just posted about. That is beautiful artwork!

For me, my love of decals started with these beauties:

Aren't they lovely? I'm very happy to have the black silhouette hanging in our apartment. It makes such a statement.

And a friend recently sent me these:

I love this series of decals because I adore Jillian's picture frame-inspired wallpaper but didn't want to wallpaper my apartment walls. This decal provides a similar look without the commitment.

So...are wall decals a really sophisticated design element? Maybe not.

But do they make me happy? Absolutely.

The fact that wall stickers are temporary means that I can switch up my decor anytime I want. That's a huge bonus! And in my opinion, that's why they'll be "in" for quite awhile.

Abacus and Square Root Wall Art

I'm a fan of colorful things in baby and kids rooms. Last year, I put this abacus in my son's room above his crib. It's a nod to learning while looking good, too.

And then I came across this in the latest CB2 catalog. Different than the abacus, but with a similar color palette and feeling, this square root wall art would be equally great in a kids room, bedroom or living room.

Such a great, playful quality in both. Aren't they fun?

So Glad You're Here...and other great sayings

Last week, I posted about the wall display at a West Elm store. One hour after walking into West Elm, and only a few blocks away, I spotted this display in a Gap store.

At first glance, it seems pretty typical for a clothing store. But then I noticed this one item.

Isn't that a sweet message? How nice that would be displayed in the home. It got me thinking of other messages that would be equally charming in a home. Things like:

GOOD MORNING, SUNSHINE

YOU PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE

SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU

WELCOME TO MY HAPPY HOME

It's so easy to make this sign. I like how it's centered with all caps graphics with a little extra space between each letter. The white letters on a black background look good with the white matting and black frame but any color background would work well.

It's so simple that you could even have rotating messages. Maybe something for everyday, something special for the holidays, or even a random HAPPY TUESDAY if you felt like it.

Travel the world of Hermes

I just discovered travel the world of Hermès, a special little part of the Hermès website. It is absolutely delightful!

(I just knew it was going to be fun when this little guy with a top hat and angel wings floated across the homepage...so adorable.)

The site is fun, quirky, and beautifully designed. Full of great content too.

Each of the thumbnails on the home page (pictured above) is a link to a unique interactive component that features a Hermès product or concept.

For instance, the page below introduces petit h, a pop-up shop that travels the world promoting favorite Hermès artists and creations not found in traditional Hermès stores.

I think the petit h logo is fantastic.

Did you know that Hermès sells wallpaper? This part of the site actually lets you virtually "hang" your own wallpaper.

I have to confess that I spent a lot of time playing here! So many different combinations of beautifully patterned wallpaper layered on top of each other...all with no mess!

Below you can see a section of the site that tells the stories behind iconic Hermès products, like the Kelly bag for instance.

Did you know the bag was named after Grace Kelly?

Above is a really fun and unexpected psychedelic video of Carina Ballerina Flats floating across the screen. Mesmerizing...

Then there are these gorgeous shoes that dance across the page. (Love the orange tights and socks! Great touch.)

And since I have an obsession with silverware, I couldn't resist sharing an image of Hermès silverware. Oh my goodness, it is just stunning!

And last but certainly not least I thought this part of the site, pictured below, is really smart. Not only do they highlight their gorgeous table service, Bleus, but they offer tutorials for amazing recipes and food presentation. Beautifully delicious!

If you have some free time, I highly recommend discovering the world of Hermès. There is so much design goodness here, you won't want to leave!

Special Little Details

Oh, Anthropologie, you've done it again. I am already a big fan of your clothes, furniture, and quirky, creative decor. Now you have me swooning over tiny little details like drawer pulls!

I have been a fan of your knobs and pulls for a while now and actually purchased a few of these for a project I did last year. But now I just saw your latest arrivals and I am smitten. I want to find a dresser to paint and redo just so I can use these pulls!

These pulls have so much personality. I think I actually hear them calling to me right now, "buy me, buy me, buy me...."

Beautifully Baroque

Last weekend while at Lowe's checking out their ceiling medallions, I spotted this lovely chandelier hanging in the lighting aisle.

It reminded me of Urban Outfitters' faux chandelier.

(Wouldn't a cluster of either of these hanging lights look really great?)

Anyway, it also made me realize how much I love the baroque silhouette...and how designers are interpreting this style in new and fresh ways with modern materials.

For example, this frame from Ikea is simply striking.

I love everything in glossy black too. But West Elm's dinnerware in white is equally eye-catching.

But what if you are in the mood for some color? This cardboard chandelier silhouette in bright pink from Etsy seller Seequin may do just the trick.

Whether in color, or black and white, these contemporary takes on an antique concept would add a lot of drama and impact to any room.

a clever gallery wall

While in Georgetown a few weeks ago, I walked into a West Elm store. I realized recently that my favorite stores are filled with tons of inspiration -- not just from the items for sale in the store, but also in the way that the store is merchandized and decorated. In this West Elm store, it was the wall display that caught my eye.

I have been wanting to do a gallery wall of art in my dining room and I'm looking for creative and inexpensive ways to do this. Framing can be costly but did you notice that some of the frames on this wall aren't your typical frames? Some are drawn with chalk!

My dining room walls don't have chalkboard paint on them but couldn't this same idea be done with cut-out paper? Frame shapes like these would work well:

I think the trick here is to make the frame a decorative style or a bright color so it looks obvious and intentional.

Cut paper or chalk frames are a great way to fill up a gallery wall and add a touch of whimsy to a space. Easy to do and such a fun look. I can't wait to try this out myself.

favorite mirror of the moment

There is something about this mirror that I love. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

The distressed color accented with bits of gold feels perfectly unique -- like something you unearthed from an estate sale or house sale chock-full of items. I think it's stunning.

It's especially nice when paired with a sleek lamp in front of it. A perfect contrast between new/modern and old...or something that looks old, at least.

a quilted perch

These beautiful ottomans, designed by Danish company Hay, are composed of antique Indian saris that have been quilted together into spectacular combinations.

Gorgeous designs, eclectic prints, and intense color make for the most perfect perch. The saris are all hand-made which adds a wonderfully personal touch.
